Social Workers

Social workers

When schools invest in mental health services, there is improved attendance, academic achievement, higher graduation rates, and overall school safety.  In addition, mental health services reduce rates of suspensions and expulsions. Social workers and school counselors are trained in de-escalation techniques which strongly benefit students and support teachers and administration.

Social workers are a necessary and integral part of any successful school.  They provide invaluable resources for students and their families and are an integral part of a comprehensive mental health program.  Social workers provide therapeutic support to students by providing individual and group counseling; they advocate for students and their families by assisting with resources such as food assistance, housing, mental health services, and academic support.  Social workers collaborate with school counselors and other members of a school staff to address and respond to students’ emotional, social, behavioral, and academic needs.

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) advocates for the ratio of at least one social worker for every 250 students. However, many school districts push the ratios closer to 500 students in high school, and zero social workers in lower grades.
